Choosing A Lawyer
Choosing a lawyer may be the most important decision you will ever make.
When you find yourself in a situation that demands the knowledge and expertise of someone who understands our legal
system, the most significant facet of your relationship with this person is trust. Whether your situation is of a personal
or business-related nature, you will want to receive the attention and assistance that you need to either put a difficult
problem to rest or get your business matters taken care of efficiently. Choose the lawyer who has the capabilities of
handling your situation in a prompt and professional manner.
Be aware that each lawyer has an obligation
to you which must be upheld and maintained according to a strict code of conduct which is set by each individual state.
A list of these requirements and codes is available through the North Carolina Bar Association, but here are a few
which are of great importance:
• Your lawyer must keep all meetings, exchanges, and information confidential. Under no circumstance is your lawyer to discuss your case with anyone else unless you have given explicit consent for them to do so.
• Your lawyer must maintain open comimunication, so that your case can be handled in a timely manner.
• Your lawyer is required to follow whatever your directions are within the limitations of the law.
The better you know your lawyer’s legal obligations to you as a client, the more accurate your expectations of their capabilities will be.
