Sonny grew up on a tobacco and dairy farm near Winterville, North Carolina. After receiving his J.D. at Oklahoma City University and his LL.M. in taxation at New York University, he returned to Pitt County to found McLawhorn and Associates. He proudly serves as a deacon at Reedy Branch Free Will Baptist Church, Vice President of the North Carolina Foundation for Christian Ministries, and serves on the board of directors for the Greenville Choral Society.

In the past, Sonny has served on the boards for the Boys and Girls Club of Pitt County, the Pitt County Development Commission, and the Greenville Community Shelter, Inc. He has been a guest presenter at East Carolina University on multiple occasions and has presented more than 200 programs to various professional organizations and civic groups. He and his wife have three children, two of whom work as attorneys in Oklahoma City and one who attends a local high school.
